for literally no one but you, he scoffs. ‘cause, you know, unless you want to sell the SWORD, we don’t exactly have money to spare. of all the things they could’ve grabbed on their way out, he’s chosen the sword of orynth, refusing to see the ancestral family heirloom fall into adarlanian hands. you look like hell spat you out with or without twigs, fireheart, he teased, before his grin turned serious. we’ll stop in a town soon, i promise. just wait ‘til we’re done crossing the forest. it’s allsbrook land beyond. surely they wouldn’t have let soldiers stay. at least, they have to believe it. wait— did you see what i saw ? looked like dinner with fur to me.

The darkness conceals her POUT, thank the Wyrd. She picks at piece of foliage that had entangled in her golden hair, flicking it to the side with disdain. ❝ It’s not like the sword is getting much action anyways. It might as well be renamed the dust collector of Orynth ! ❞ She jests, an arm flaying out in a dramatic notion. ❝ What, are you going to kill it with dust collector, over here ? For some reason I thought you would be BETTER at hunting. ❞ Oh, she was surely in a mess of trouble now.

don’t look at me. my back is still blaming me for it. of course she’ll see right through his words, but it doesn’t hurt to PRETEND. especially considering that’s what he’s been doing since they left orynth — pretending things are going to be alright very, very soon, pretending he doesn’t worry half as much as he truly does. he wrestles with her dress for a few seconds before both her legs are looped around his elbows ; only then can they keep walking. even cooking them won’t last long enough. we’d need either salt or smoke…and we don’t have either, since we’re still too close to villages and towns to risk a smoky fire. should i remind you that the last time you tried to light one, you almost set my spare changes of clothes on FIRE too ?

❝ That would have been a happy accident.❞ She smiles cheerfully, suppressing a laugh. Since they had fled their summer estate where her parents, her entire kingdom, had been MURDERED, Aelin had watched how Aedion stepped up and took care of her. How he pretended that the entire weight of the world wasn’t on his shoulders.

But she took that small, SCARED part of her and tucked it away, so deep down that not even she knew where that part of her slept. And she believed him when he said that everything was going to be okay.  ❝ Why can’t we just go into the village and stay there ? I’m tired of waking up with twigs in my hair.

not if you quit whining into my ears. the words were harsh but the tone playful, a reminder of how he loved teasing her. it was an old habit, picked up when he’d first arrived in terrasen, and it seemed to him he ought to KEEP it. he’d give her a normal childhood — as normal as one could be when spent as a fire-wielding princess, with a demi-fae teenager as her only guide and mentor. ( they could handle this ; more than could, they had to. ) aedion knelt on the mossy ground for her to climb. this is the last time, though, he warned. you’re too old for piggyback rides. well, he’d still be able to carry her for a while more, but… better not give her ideas. if you see a rabbit, kick me. or pull my hair. gently. the last pieces of meat we had started rotting.

image

Her nose wrinkles at the thought. She didn’t much care for water You said that last time. ❞ She points out, a triumphant grin on her face as she climbs onto his back, taking a handful of the soft fabric of his tunic as she locks her arms around his neck.  They wouldn’t have rotted so quickly if you had let me cook them. She grumbles into his hair. And by cook, she means burned with her magic.

just a little more, aelin, the half-fae boy promised. there was a garrison in that last village we crossed. we’ve got to put some more distance between them and us. he handed her a skin of water, along with an apple he’d snatched from a stall. ( part of him felt guilty, but saving up for a boat made them run low on money. ) just drink as much as you want. we’ll fill it up in the next drinkable stream. and when you’re done with the apple… a sigh. deanna, i thought i’d told her i wouldn’t do this anymore. …you can climb on my back, if you want. won’t tire me as much as it should. thank the gods for his fae parentage.

The young princess huffs in protest, guzzling down the water. Still in her FAE form, she can taste every layer of minerals in the water, and even traces of the ANIMAL skin itself. She makes a distasteful face.

Her expression immediately lighten up at his words. Oh, how she loved when he allowed her climb into his back and ride through the forest ! Although he was only five years older than she ( and only being a demi-Fae ) he was certainly much stronger and had much more stamina. Piggy-backing through the canopy reminded her of their many play dates in Terrasen, as if this was all just another GAME they were playing. The pain that welled up in her chest dulled slightly.

Promise you won’t toss me into the river this time, then ? ❞ She smiles widely before biting into her apple.

The forest was dark, their pathway illuminated by the moonlight. Untrained feet stomped, and crunched, and cracked their way through the forest floor ( though a bit was contributed to the pout was ever so present ). The hem of her dress was coated in dirt, splitting at the ends in utter ruin. Her voice drained and raspy. Aedion, when are we going to stop ? I’m tired and HUNGRY
